Comparatives & Superlatives
the eternal ‘who did it better’
los comparativos y superlativos
In this unit
Comparatives and superlatives let you rank things. For short adjectives, add -er and -est (faster, the fastest). For longer ones, use more and the most (more careful, the most careful). You can also say two things are equal with (not) as…as. In this unit you'll practise all three, plus the irregular ones like good better the → → best.
Con adjetivos cortos, añade -er y - est (faster, the fastest). Con los largos, usa more y the most (more careful, the most careful). También puedes decir que dos cosas son iguales con (not) as…as. Aquí practicarás los tres, más los irregulares como good better the best.→ →

The story of English · la historia
English kept two ways to compare, and which one you use comes down to sound. The endings -er/-est are old and native; 'more/most' came later. Try adding -est to a long word — 'beautifulest' — and it's a mouthful. That is why long words take 'more/most' (more beautiful) and only short words take -er/-est (taller): it's about what is easy to say. Spanish uses just one way ('más… que'), so English feels fussier here.
Las terminaciones -er/-est son antiguas y nativas; 'more/most' llegó después.
