The Silent Ones

letters you write but don't say

las letras mudas

In this unit

English writes plenty of letters it never says — the k in know, the h in hour, the t in listen. Spanish is phonetic, so these feel like a trap. Learn the common ones and stop dropping them in writing.

The rule · La regla

Silent k before n: know, knee, knife. Silent w before r: write, wrong. Silent b after m: comb, thumb. Silent h: hour, honest. Silent t: listen, castle. You don’t say them — but you must write them.

*k* muda antes de n: ~know~. *w* muda antes de r: ~write~. *b* muda tras m: ~comb~. *h* muda: ~hour~. *t* muda: ~listen~. No se pronuncian, pero hay que *escribirlas*.

The story of English · la historia

Why does 'knight' have a silent 'k' and 'gh'? Because they were once real sounds! Long ago, people did say the 'k' in 'knight' and 'knee', and the 'gh' sounded like the rough 'ch' in Scottish 'loch'. Around the 1500s, English speakers stopped saying these sounds — but the printing press had already frozen the spelling, so the letters stayed. Some silent letters are even stranger: the 'b' in 'debt' was never spoken at all. Scholars added it to show the Latin word behind it ('debitum'). Spanish says almost every letter, so these silent letters feel unfair — but each one is a little piece of history.

How it works · Cómo funciona

1. k + n: the k is silent (know, knee, knock).

2. w + r: the w is silent (write, wrong, wrap).

3. m + b: the b is silent (comb, thumb, climb). Also silent h (hour) and t (listen, castle).

Why it’s tricky in spanish · ¿Por qué cuesta?

Because you don’t hear them, it’s tempting to write nife or isten. The fix is memory, not sound: keep a little list of your silent-letter words and picture them, letters and all.
