Most plurals just add -s, but some need -es, some change y ies→, and a few swap f ves→. Get the pattern and you’ll never write “babys” or “knifes” again.

The rule · La regla

Just add -s to most words: cats, phones. Add -es after s, x, ch, sh: boxes, watches. After a consonant + y, change to -ies: baby babies→ (but boy boys→, because there’s a vowel before the y). A few change f/fe ves→: knife knives→, leaf leaves→.

Añade *-s* a la mayoría: *cats*. Añade *-es* tras s, x, ch, sh: *boxes, watches*. Tras *consonante + y*, cambia a *-ies*: *baby babies* (pero *boy boys*). Algunos cambian *f/fe ves*: → → → *knife knives*.→

The story of English · la historia

Most English plurals just add '-s', but a few are strange: 'child children', 'foot → → feet', 'mouse mice', 'ox oxen'. These are not mistakes — they are survivors. Old → → English had several ways to make a plural, not only '-s'. Over time, '-s' won and took over almost everything, but a handful of very common, very old words kept their original plural. So when you meet 'children' or 'feet', you are looking at a living fossil from a thousand years ago. Spanish kept it simple: add -s or -es, almost always.

How it works · Cómo funciona

1. Ends in s, x, ch, sh? add -es (box boxes, watch watches).→ → →

2. Consonant + y? y turns to -ies (party parties). Vowel + y? → → just -s (boy boys).→

3. Ends in f or fe? often -ves (leaf leaves, knife knives).→ → →

Why it’s tricky in spanish · ¿Por qué cuesta?

Spanish plurals are tidy (-s or -es), so English tempts you into babys or boxs. Check the ending first: hiss/shush sounds take - es; a consonant before y flips to -ies.
