The Sneaky E
school, not eschool — plus the s-z buzz
la E fantasma
In this unit
Spanish loves to add a little e before words that start with s + another letter: e- school, e-Spain, e-sport. English doesn’t. Start straight on the s. Bonus: English ssometimes buzzes like a z (dogs, is, easy).
El español añade una ** e** antes de palabras que empiezan por s + consonante: ** e**-school, ** e**-Spain. El inglés no. Empieza directamente por la ** s**. Además, la ** s** inglesa a veces ** zumba** como una z.
The sound · El sonido
No e! school, Spain, student, sport all begin on a clean s — lead with the hiss, don’t warm up with an “e”. And watch the buzz: dogs, is, was, easy, please end (or hide) a z sound, not a plain s. Spanish s never buzzes, so this one’s new.
¡Sin e! *school, Spain, student* empiezan por una *s* limpia. Y ojo al *zumbido*: *dogs, is, easy* llevan sonido de *z*. La *s* española nunca zumba.
How to make it · Cómo se hace
1. Start the word on the s itself — imagine a snake’s hiss, no “e” first.
2. For the z-buzz, keep the same mouth as s but switch your voice ON.
3. Feel it: sssss (no voice) vs zzzzz (voice/buzz). Now say ‘dogs’ — that’s a z at the end.
Say these · Dílas en voz alta
| no e / clean s | s that buzzes (z) | español |
|---|---|---|
| school | dogs | colegio / perros |
| Spain | is | España / es |
| student | was | estudiante / era |
| sport | easy | deporte / fácil |
| small | please | pequeño / por favor |
| Spanish | rose | español / rosa |
| start | music | empezar / música |
| stop | these | parar / estos |
Why it’s tricky in spanish · ¿Por qué cuesta?
Two Spanish habits to drop. One: the warm-up e (“I study eSpanish at eschool”). Two: making every s a plain hiss. Say the s-cluster words cold — straight in — and let the buzzy ones buzz. Record yourself; you’ll hear the sneaky e vanish.
Dos hábitos que quitar: la *e* de calentamiento (“eSpanish, eschool”) y hacer toda *s* un simple siseo. Ataca directo la s, y deja que las palabras con zumbido zumben.
♪ say it with a chant
“No little e before the s —” “school and Spain, you’ll say them best.” “Dogs and is go buzz-buzz-buzz:” “that’s the z that hides in us.”
