Very or Berry?

telling B and V apart

¿very o berry?

In this unit

In Spanish, b and v sound exactly the same. In English they don’t. B is a little lip- pop; V is a soft buzz with your teeth on your lip. Get them mixed up and very becomes berry.

The sound · El sonido

B: press both lips together and let them pop — same as Spanish. V: rest your top teeth gently on your bottom lip and buzz (voice on). No teeth = no V.

How to make it · Cómo se hace

1. B — lips together, then pop them apart. No teeth involved.

2. V — top teeth touch bottom lip, keep your voice all the way through.

3. Trick: put a finger on your lips. For V you should feel a tickle/buzz; for B you feel the pop.

Why it’s tricky in spanish · ¿Por qué cuesta?

Because baca and vaca are identical in Spanish, your mouth wants to make one B-ish sound for both English letters. The fix is physical, not mental: for every v, put your teeth on your lip and buzz. Do it slowly at first — your mouth learns fast.
