Present Perfect — Experience
the receipts you're still holding
el present perfect de experiencia
In this unit
The present perfect (have/has + past participle) connects the past with now. You use it for life experiences ('Have you ever…?'), for recent news, and for actions whose result still matters. The key rule: you never use it with a finished time word like yesterday or in 2019. In this unit you'll practise it with ever, never, just, already and yet.

The story of English · la historia
The present perfect grew out of possession. In Old English, 'I have the letter written' meant 'I own a letter that is now finished' — 'written' described the letter. Here is the shift: if you own a finished letter, it means you finished writing it — so the meaning slid from 'I own a written letter' to 'I have done the writing'. Once people heard it that way, 'have + participle' became one tense: a past action that still matters now. Spanish has the same form (he escrito la carta) but uses it more freely, so take care in English.
