Past Perfect

the plot twist that already happened

el pasado pluscuamperfecto

In this unit

The past perfect (had + past participle) is the 'earlier past'. When you're already telling a story in the past and you need to jump further back, this is the tense you use. It makes the order of events clear: the past perfect action happened first. In this unit you'll practise it with by the time, after and before.

Aquí lo practicarás con by the time, after y before.

The story of English · la historia

This tense exists to solve one simple problem: in a story with two past events, how do you show which happened first? English marks the earlier one with the past perfect ('had' + participle). 'The train had left before we arrived' makes it clear the train left first. It already existed in Old English, and Spanish built the very same tool (había + participio: 'había salido'), so you can usually translate directly.

'The train had left before we arrived' deja claro que el tren salió primero.

In plain English · en cristiano

The past perfect (had + past participle) is the earlier past — the thing that had already happened before another past moment.
